Art: Laura Andrews
Monday, August 1, 2011 ARTIST STATEMENT: "This body of work takes its themes from the relationship between people and the natural world, and the dependence and anxiety that this relationship produces. Animals cannot help but be natural, yet people have less surety of their position in relationship to nature. Animals in particular take on a role as ciphers in the paintings and drawings. Intense, dissonant color appears in the work. At first seemingly unnatural, it is symbolic of energy. It acts as a pulse. Instead of being strictly descriptive, color laces through the paintings describing the movement and flow of life. In many of the drawings the background is empty, a void. The landscape space so often associated with visual pleasure is here implied, empty and uncomfortable." You can find Laura Andrew's bio in the Paper Darts Cronies section.
